3 Steps to Buying a Smartphone

Smartphones – are they really the smart choice? Most people today would agree, yes. By having mobile access to e-mail, web sites, and photo sharing capabilities, it becomes easier to stay connected to those you love. In addition, you now have the capability of staying constantly abreast of the latest news and updates from your favorite businesses, news sources, and even the weather.

If you’re thinking about purchasing a smartphone, or simply curious as to what the hullabaloo is all about, here are some things to consider:

1. Think about what you need, not what you want. Smartphones come with a wide range of fancy bells and whistles, like apps that operate as an on-the-go flashlight or create fun filters for your photos. But these can easily overshadow the core reason why you need one in the first place, which is to have better access to the things you need to stay connected to others.

Easy-to-use e-mail, texting, and web browsing should be the essential qualities of any smartphone. A sturdy phone exterior with easy readability and usability should also be important factors. And let’s not forget – it’s still a telephone, which means it needs to be able to make phone calls!

2. Look within your carrier. Purchasing a smartphone directly tied to your mobile carrier is almost always cheaper than buying a phone from a third-party source. Since smartphones must be hooked up to a 3G, or mobile Internet connection, to operate, going through your wireless phone carrier is probably easiest. By going through your carrier dealer, getting a smartphone can prove to be an easier transition than most people may think.

3. Practice at the store. When you visit a phone dealer, play around with as many smartphones as you are available. Sales people are always willing to encourage this because they know the longer you play with a smartphone, the more likely you are to buy one.

To test the waters, try adding a fake number in the phonebook to see how easily you can input, save, and find it. Also try logging onto the web browser and see how easy you can navigate around it. Above all, ask lots of questions! Employees want to give you a phone that works best for you because it saves them from dealing with unhappy purchases in the future.
